About this work
An infant wrapped in a pink hooded raincoat looks straight ahead from the center of the canvas, ringed by several goldfish - orange, yellow-green, and white with red markings - that drift as if swimming through water. A dark bird-like silhouette hovers at the lower right above a narrow brown ledge anchoring the bottom edge.
The background is built from layered strokes of blue and teal suggesting submerged light, against which the child's pink hood and the fish's warm colors stand out sharply. Paint is applied thickly and loosely, brush marks left visible, giving the scene a dreamlike, floating quality rather than a literal room or aquarium.
